FL disk array support on Series 800
On May 1, both Disk Memory Division and Commercial System
Division announced the support and the availability of a new 2
GB-based FL disk array. The new disk array offers higher
capacity than the previous 1.3 GB-based disk array and lower
dollar per MB as well.
Although the 1.3 GB-based disk array will continue to be
supported on Series 800 Business Servers, there is no plan to
support the new 2 GB-based FL disk array. There are three
reasons why the new FL disk array is not supported.
(1) Customers in the open system market demands industry
standards like SCSI.
(2) Customers who are interested in OLTP type of application
will see little performance benefit with the new disk array.
Although the new array has faster disks, this performance
benefit is minimized because each spindle contains 50 % more
storage.
(3) Many 800 customers have asked for RAID level 5 support which
is not supported on the new FL disk array.
In summary, SCSI-based disk products provide standard adherence,
investment protection and superior performance in the long run.
However, many customers will continue to favor FL technology for
its good noise immunity and long cable distance in the
foreseeable future.
